Wedding in Monemvasia | Emily & Erik

wedding in the castle of Monemvasia

In the Castle of Monemvasia

This really is not the first time I have photographed a wedding in Monemvasia. Over the years I have visited the place many times over, and I have even studied its history as history is also something I have a great interest at. Monemvasia is a medieval town, located on a tiny island off the east coast of the Peloponnese. The island is linked to the mainland by a short causeway of 200m in length, making it feel like a secluded land that has come out straight from a fairytale. Boasting stunning Venetian architecture and picturesque cobbled streets, it makes perfect sense why a couple would choose it as their wedding destination. However, Emily and Erik had an even more special reason for holding their big day there.

Emily was baptised at the very church they decided to have their wedding in Monemvasia at, and she had always had fond memories of family holidays as a child at the beautiful fortress town. When she first took Erik there, he was enchanted by the place’s atmosphere, making the choice of their wedding destination easy as they were keen to avoid the glitzy weddings they had been accustomed to while living in New York.

Strolling along the cobbled paths amid mansions and ruins, the bride was escorted to the church by her loved ones. Tin buckets filled with aromatic herbs lined the way to the altar, where the couple exchanged eternal vows. At the reception which followed at the carefully restored Lazaretto Hotel, the guests had an opportunity to take an intimate glimpse into the couple’s history which was outlined thoughtfully on displayed photographs hanging from drying lines, adding a unique personal touch to the day. Dining on exquisite Greek cuisine and drinking delicious local wine, the bride and groom enjoyed a magnificent evening overlooking the Myrtoan Sea. The couple’s goal was to have an unforgettable, big, crazy party on their wedding day, which, judging by the fact everyone seems to have lost track of time and was dancing barefoot until 5 in the morning, was successfully achieved.

I really hope you enjoy this story
