Wedding in Kythira | Nikki & Simon

A donkey ride with the bride and groom in Kythira

Once again this is not my first wedding in Kythira. I have been to the island many times in the past as I love all the underdeveloped islands in Greece. Kythira is a very multi-faceted place, located on the south coast of the Peloponnese. While geographically it is part of the Ionian Heptanese, it administratively belongs to the region of Attica. Kythira’s plethora of villages each have their unique, distinctive character and the island’s down-to-earth vibe and beautiful natural landscape are attracting more and more expats, who are abandoning their former lives to pursue an idyllic coastal life. Other than its natural beauty, though, Kythira is also known for romance. Myth has it that Aphrodite was born just off the island’s coast (which has inspired famous art such as Jean Antoine Watteau’s “Pilgrimage to Cythera”) and, so, it is an ideal destination for lovebirds, like Nikki and Simon. Coming all the way from Australia, the couple and their guests had some time to enjoy the island’s stunning rocky beaches and plenty of local taverns before the ceremony. The wedding venue was the fabulous Windmill Resort, which is located in the heart of Kythira and spans across a spectacular 14000 meters of verdant landscape. Decorated in a rustic fashion for the day, with displays of wooden chests and candles, it provided a gorgeous stage for the couple’s union. The bride and bridesmaids all wore off-white, while the groom and groomsmen also stuck to a light-coloured palette that made for a very elegant and homogenised look in front of the old, small white chapel. The couple left the ceremony in a memorable manner that gained lots of laughter from their cheerful guests: the groom riding a donkey, while his wife walked beside him holding his hand. The reception, held right underneath a windmill next to a pool with floating flights, was equally memorable, complete with Greek dancing and plate-breaking, as well as a whisky and cigar bar and puppies as special guests.
